Research Project

Cultural centers play a pivotal role in the development and well-being of college students, particularly within predominantly white institutions. Where large university settings can make marginalized communities feel isolated as the only minority in their class. Cultural Centers provide a home away from home, where they can be reassured in their identities, and experiences. The significance of these centers go beyond just providing space, rather they foster the growth of student’s personal, psychological, and academic. Students find and build communities within these spaces that make them feel culturally seen and heard. What results out of this is a stronger sense of self, and confidence within them that reflects in every aspect of their life. This project adopts a unique take on Cultural Centers by highlighting operations, challenges, and successes of the Center of Latino Arts and Culture at Rutgers University. Through this project we explore the necessity of having a safe home on campus. Why is it so pivotal that we invest in cultural centers for the betterment of our future.
